(27)What is IoT? List down applications and risks associated with IoT?

Answer:
  • The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, objects, animals or people who have ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.
  • For example: Wi-Fi enabled air-conditioners, refrigerator, washing machines etc. that can be controlled from anywhere.

Applications of IoT:
(1)All Wi-Fi enabled home appliances can be considered as IoT. Home owners can keep track of all activities in house through their hand held devices.

(2)CCTV camera is also monitored through hand held devices.

(3)Office machines and equipments shall be connected through net. It will help to identify various parameters without human interference like no. of staffs present in office or no. of printouts generated through office printer.

(4)IoT can be used in various government initiatives and schemes.

(5)Human being can also be authenticated by use of IoT.

(6)IoT have capability to connect the whole world.

Risks of IoT:

(1)Risk to manufacturer:
  • If not equipped, manufacturers may be out of business in few years if IOT becomes a necessary product feature.
  • Data Security: Security of personal data of consumer will be a major challenge for manufacturer. Any compromise with this data may have major impact on entity as well as the individual to whom it relates to.

(2)Risk to user:
  • Network related risks: All network related risk are applicable to IoT as well.
  • Privacy Concern: Privacy concerns are generated when the IoT device collects personal data of users and no proper protection of such personal data. As IoT devices are vulnerable to attacks, data protection is of high risk
  • Insecure Software/Firmware: Devices should have the ability to be updated when vulnerabilities are discovered (Like Computers or smartphones). However the lack of ability for an IoT device to be updated presents a security weakness on its own.
  • Insufficient Security Configurability: Users of the IoT device have limited or no ability to alter its security controls of the device. The risk associated with this is that the IoT device could be easier to attack allowing unauthorized access to the device or the data.
  • Obsolescence Risk: Companies which wants to bring new product may stop support to older products and force users to buy new products.

(3)Technology Risk:
  • Lack of technical standards for hardware as well as software related to IoT makes the task of developing applications tough.

(4)Environmental Risk:
  • Studies are being conducted to analyse the impact of  IoT devices on environment. There no definitive data available as of now, but the risk is being considered.
