(16)List down type of resource and application areas for grid computation.

Answer: Following are the type of resources for gird computing:

(1)Computation:
  • The most common resource is Computing Cycles.
  • The processor of the machines on the grid provides computing cycles.
  • The processors can vary in speed, architecture, software platform, and other associated factors, such as memory, storage, and connectivity.
  • Scalability is a measure of how efficiently the multiple processors on a grid are used.

(2)Storage:
  • The second most common resource used in a grid is Data Storage.
  • A grid providing an integrated view of data storage is called a Data Grid.
  • Storage is provided by each machine for grid use.
  • Storage can be in form of processor’s memory or it can be secondary storage, using hard disk drives or other permanent storage media.

(3)Communications:
  • Communications within the grid are important for co-ordination.
  • High bandwidth and high speed network will facilitate the communication.
  • Redundant communication paths are required to handle network failures and excessive data traffic.

(4)Software and Licenses:
  • In case of expensive licenses, licensing arrangement is done to permit the software to be installed on all of the machines of a grid.
  • But this may limit the number of installations that can be simultaneously used at any given instant.
  • License management software keeps track and controls multiple execution at any given time

(5)Special equipment:
  • Grids can have different architectures, operating systems, devices, capacities, and equipment.
  • Grid use different kind of criteria for assigning jobs to machines.
  • For example, some equipment is available only for medical research. Grid allocates only relevant jobs to this equipment.

Application Area of Grid Computing:
(1)Used in engineering field to design, execute, & analyze various experiments.

(2)Used by insurance companies to collect and analyse data from partner hospitals for fraud detection.

(3)Organizations are widely using grid computing in the area of load or resource balancing. It helps in partitioning of jobs, identifying the resources, and queuing of the jobs.

(4)It helps in large scale, geographically dispersed science and engineering research which are done through interaction with people, heterogeneous computing resources, information systems and instruments.
